You can now buy Fonio (Acha) Grain, also known as ‘Acha’ in Nigeria, a highly nutritious, easily digestible, gluten-free grain grown in West Africa.
Fonio is packed with essential nutrients and amino acids. It is rich in protein and iron, making it a great choice for maintaining energy levels, while also providing a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, and dietary fiber. The iron in fonio helps reduce tiredness and fatigue, while its protein and fiber content promote a lasting feeling of fullness.
With its slightly nutty flavor and fine texture—much smaller than quinoa or couscous—fonio is a delicious and versatile grain. Plus, it has a low glycemic index, making it an excellent food option for diabetics.
Our Raw Fonio is locally grown by smallholder farmers in Northern Nigeria using sustainable and eco-friendly methods. It is 100% natural, free from additives and preservatives.
How to Make Fonio
Fonio is incredibly versatile! You can enjoy it as a cereal, in stir-fries, or as a substitute for quinoa and couscous. Cooked fonio can also be blended into smoothies for an extra fiber boost to help keep you fuller for longer. It absorbs a lot of water, so a little goes a long way!
To Serve as Rice or in Stir-Fries
- Toast ½ cup fonio in a small saucepan with ½ teaspoon of oil, stirring over medium heat.
- Add a pinch of salt and 1 cup of water, then stir well until the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat, let it cool, fluff with a fork, and use it in your favorite recipes.
For Cereal
- Bring 2 cups of water or milk to a boil.
- Add ¼ cup fonio grain and stir for 5 minutes, tasting to ensure it’s fully cooked.
- Add more water if needed. Sweeten as desired and top with fruits and nuts for extra flavor and nutrition.
Fonio grain cereal is an ideal gluten-free breakfast for both adults and children from 6 months old.
